What is an OMR Sheet? An OMR (Optical Mark Recognition) sheet is a specially designed answer sheet used in multiple-choice question (MCQ) exams like UPSC Prelims. It is scanned & evaluated by a machine which reads marked answers based on dark bubbles filled by candidates. Key Features of an OMR Sheet Pre-printed Fields OMR sheets come with specific sections where candidates must enter details like roll number, subject code & booklet series. Bubble Marking System Answers must be marked by completely filling designated circles (bubbles) with a black ballpoint pen. Machine Readable Format The sheet is processed using OMR scanning technology so even minor mistakes can lead to answer rejection. No Manual Checking Since evaluation is automated machine will not consider partially filled overwritten or incorrectly marked answers. Unique Booklet Series Code Every UPSC test booklet has a series code (A/B/C/D) which must be correctly marked on OMR sheet for evaluation to be accurate. How Does an OMR Sheet Work? Each OMR sheet is scanned & darkened bubbles are detected by system. The scanner assigns marks based on correctly filled bubbles corresponding to right answers. Incorrect markings, double bubbling, stray marks or incorrect subject codes can result in zero marks for question or disqualification. Understanding UPSC OMR Sheet Before going into instructions it is vital to understand structure of UPSC OMR sheet. The sheet consists of two main sections Candidate Information Section Roll Number (must be carefully marked in respective circles) Test Booklet Series (A/B/C/D) Subject Code (for General Studies & CSAT) Answer Marking Section Each question has four answer options (A/B/C/D) Candidates must fully darken correct bubble using a black ballpoint pen No corrections, overwriting or erasing is allowed Understanding these sections makes sure that candidates do not make errors that can lead to disqualification.
