Civil Services Examination conducted by UPSC is arguably one of the toughest examinations in the world. It not only tests the aspirant’s theoretical knowledge but also her ability to apply that knowledge in real-life situations. UPSC tests the candidate’s ability to endure pressure and apply her presence of mind in tough situations. Thus, the prerequisites to succeed in this examination are dedication and consistent hard work. Qualities such as perseverance and a positive attitude are must-haves.
Civil Services is not merely an examination but a way of life. Even if a candidate is not able to crack this exam, if S/he has prepared sincerely, S/he is bound to do well in her/his life. Therefore, candidates should prepare for this exam with an open mind and thoroughly enjoy the process without worrying much about the result.
Candidates need to understand that Civil Services is just an exam and it is not a game of life and death. It is not a war. It is just an exam to assess the suitability of the candidate for Civil Services. Candidates must not instill unnecessary fear about this exam in their minds. Yes, it is a tough exam but it is not impossible to clear it. Having a positive attitude will enable students to prepare for this exam without taking any undue pressure.
Another important aspect of the Civil Services Exam is that it tests the candidate’s clarity on basic concepts. Merely having superficial knowledge about various issues is not enough. Conceptual clarity is non-negotiable. Thus, students must focus on building a strong foundation by getting a good command of the basics. For this, students must focus on NCERTs and Newspaper Reading. Also, it is beyond my understanding.. why students are in a rush to clear this exam. Remember, this exam requires you to give sufficient time to every subject. Hence, rushing the preparation process won’t help. It can be counterproductive at times. The point is rather than rushing the process of preparation and giving multiple attempts, the student must give enough time for their preparation before giving their first attempt and try to give their best shot.
Everything said and done, the most important thing is that clearing Civil Services Exam is not an end in itself; it is the beginning of the most exciting journey in life which at times might become very tough. Hence, while preparing for this examination, candidates should think like an officer and try to find solutions to real-life problems that will help them not only in sailing through this exam but also enable them to make a difference in the lives of downtrodden, poverty-stricken, vulnerable, marginalized, and disadvantaged sections of society.
