WBCS to follow Old Syllabus, Official Notification Out

WBCS to follow Old Syllabus, Official Notification Out

The West Bengal State Government has officially withdrawn its previous notification proposing changes to the West Bengal Civil Service (WBCS) (Executive) examination pattern. Initially, the government intended to change the exam structure to a more descriptive, UPSC-style approach that would have required applicants to provide thorough responses.

This ruling has since been overturned, and the government has declared that the current WBCS exam format will remain in effect for the time being. In September of last year, the West Bengal Public Service Commission (WBPSC) proposed an extensive update of the WBCS exam pattern, which will be implemented beginning in 2025. WBCS officially released their WBCS 2025 notification on 17th June 2025 for their upcoming exam pattern.

Preliminary Exam Paper Pattern

There will be 200 multiple-choice questions on the objective-type paper.  The paper, which will last for 2½ hours, will have 200 marks.  This paper will adhere to the level of knowledge that is often anticipated of students who have graduated from any reputable university’s faculty.

Mains Exam Paper Pattern

  • Candidates applying for Group A and Group B are only allowed to select two papers from the list of optional subjects provided below for the Main Examination; the remaining six papers are compulsory. Two 200-mark papers will make up the optional subject. There will be three hours allotted to each paper, and each one, whether mandatory or optional, will carry 200 marks.
  • The six-paper exam will consist of four multiple-choice (MCQ) papers: (i) General Studies—I, (ii) General Studies—II, (iii) The Constitution of India and Indian Economy (including the role and functions of the Reserve Bank of India), and (iv) Arithmetic and Test of Reasoning.
