Scientists discovered Gangaichthys indonepalicus, a new subterranean earthworm eel found in the alluvial aquifers of the Indo-Gangetic Plain in Bihar.

 

 

What is Gangaichthys indonepalicus?

It is a completely new genus and species of freshwater underground fish from the family Chaudhuriidae (earthworm eels), under the order Synbranchiformes.

  • Genus name – Gangaichthys: Combines ‘Ganga’ (the river) and ‘ichthys’ (Greek for fish), meaning “Fish of the Ganga.”

  • Species name – indonepalicus: Refers to its location near the porous border between northern Bihar (India) and southern Nepal.

 

This marks the first-ever discovery of a stygobitic (subterranean) fish in the deep alluvial aquifers of the Indo-Gangetic Basin.

 

Earlier, Indian underground fishes were only found in the lateritic aquifers of Kerala and limestone caves in Meghalaya.



What are its Special Adaptations?

Gangaichthys indonepalicus evolved unique traits to survive in pitch-dark, oxygen-poor, underground waters:

  • No pigmentation: Lacks melanin, appears translucent pink with visible blood vessels.

  • Blindness: Has reduced, skin-covered micro-eyes to conserve energy.

  • No ribs: Flexible, thread-like body helps it move through fine gravel and tiny spaces.

  • Strong sensory organs: Uses sensory pores and barbels to detect prey and currents.

  • Low metabolism: Survives in low-oxygen, low-nutrient groundwater using very little energy.



What is a Subterranean or Stygobitic Organism?

Stygobites are aquatic organisms that live their entire life underground in groundwater or aquifers.

 

Types of Subterranean Fauna:

  • Stygobites: True underground aquatic species (e.g. Gangaichthys indonepalicus).

  • Stygophiles: Can live in both surface and underground water.

  • Stygoxenes: Surface species that enter groundwater temporarily.

  • Troglobites: Non-aquatic, land-dwelling cave organisms (e.g., cave spiders).

 

They act as bio-indicators of aquifer health. If stygobites are present, the groundwater is likely clean, unpolluted, and ecologically stable.
