The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation announced—Singaporean legal diplomat Tommy Koh, Bangladeshi social innovator Runa Khan, and Myanmar human rights advocate Bo Kyi—as the 2026 Ramon Magsaysay Award laureates.  

 What is the Ramon Magsaysay Award?

Asia's Premier Civic Honour: Often referred to as the "Nobel Prize of Asia", it represents the continent's most prestigious recognition for selfless governance, courageous leadership, and social development. 

Established in Memory of Ramon Magsaysay: Created in April 1957 by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund with the concurrence of the Philippine government to commemorate the 7th President of the Philippines, who died in a tragic plane crash in March 1957. 

Inclusive Geographic Mandate: Conferred annually on individuals and organizations working in Asia, regardless of race, creed, gender, or nationality, who exemplify greatness of spirit and integrity in service to human development.

Evolution of Award Categories: Originally awarded in six distinct categories (Government Service, Public Service, Community Leadership, Journalism/Literature/Creative Communication Arts, Peace and International Understanding, and Emergent Leadership); discontinued fixed categories in 2009 to embrace broader transformative civic innovations.

Physical Token of Honor: Each laureate receives a medallion embossed with an image of President Ramon Magsaysay, a certificate of recognition, and a financial cash grant during an official ceremony in Manila.

Ramon Magsaysay Awards 2026 

Tommy Koh (Singapore) - Champion of Multilateralism & Global Rule of Law:

  • Served as President of the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) from 1980 to 1982, navigating competing geopolitical interests to secure the 1982 adoption of the "Constitution for the Oceans".  

  • Chaired the 1992 Rio Earth Summit (UN Conference on Environment and Development), laying the foundation for modern global treaties on biodiversity and climate change. 

Runa Khan (Bangladesh) - Architect of Climate-Resilient Floating Healthcare:

  • Social entrepreneur and founder of the humanitarian non-governmental organization Friendship, recognized for delivering life-saving healthcare and education.

  • Converted river barges into specialized "Floating Hospitals" that navigate shifting silt islands (chars) of the Brahmaputra River.

  • Developed solar-powered micro-grids, disaster-resilient primary schools, and community paralegal clinics to protect climate refugees against annual monsoon flooding.

Bo Kyi (Myanmar) - Fearless Defender of Human Rights & Political Prisoners:

  • Co-founded the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) in 2000, establishing the primary authoritative international registry documenting unlawful arrests, torture, and extrajudicial killings under military junta rule.

  • Provides trauma therapy, psycho-social counselling, emergency medical care, and vocational retraining to rehabilitated dissidents and their families.

Indians Who Won the Ramon Magsaysay Award 

Over seven decades, more than 55 Indians have received the Ramon Magsaysay Award.

  • Acharya Vinoba Bhave (1958): First Ramon Magsaysay recipient; recognized for Community Leadership via the Bhoodan Movement, redistributing over 4 million acres to landless laborers.

  • Mother Teresa (1962): Awarded for Peace and International Understanding for founding Kolkata's Missionaries of Charity.

  • Verghese Kurien (1963): Honoured for Community Leadership as architect of Operation Flood and Amul, making India the world’s top milk producer.

  • Jayaprakash Narayan (1965): Honored for Public Service, leading Sarvodaya, rural reconstruction, and democratic civil liberties movements.

  • Satyajit Ray (1967): Awarded for Journalism, Literature, and Creative Communication Arts for showcasing Indian cinema globally.

  • Dr. M.S. Swaminathan (1971): Recognized for Community Leadership as architect of India’s Green Revolution.

  • Kiran Bedi (1994): Honoured for Government Service for prison and rehabilitation reforms at Tihar Jail.

  • Arvind Kejriwal (2006): Recognized for Emergent Leadership for RTI advocacy empowering Delhi slum residents via Parivartan.

  • Sonam Wangchuk & Dr. Bharat Vatwani (2018): Wangchuk was recognized for educational reforms and Ice Stupas in Ladakh; Dr. Vatwani for reuniting over 8,000 mentally ill destitute street persons with families.

  • Ravish Kumar (2019): Honoured for ethical, citizen-centric television journalism.

  • Dr. Ravi Kannan R. (2023): Honoured for establishing pro-poor cancer care at CCHRC in Silchar, Assam.
