The West Bengal Public Service Commission (WBPSC) conducts the West Bengal Civil Service exam annually for recruiting eligible candidates under numerous Executive Group A, B, C and D posts. WBCS (Exe.) etc. (Pre.) Examination, 2024 will be held on 7th September 2025.
Important Information
West Bengal Civil Service (Executive) etc. Examination, 2024 shall be held as per old scheme and syllabus as laid down under Notification No. 437-PAR(WBCS) / 1D-389/13 dated 27.02.2014.
The new pattern and syllabi for the said examination as laid down under Notification No. 361-PAR(WBCS)/1D-179/21 dated 15.03.2023 and its subsequent amendments in terms of Notification No. 1060-PAR (WBCS) / 1D- 179/21 dated 24.07.2024 shall come into effect on and from the West Bengal Civil Service (Executive) etc. Examination, 2025.

1. Understand the WBCS Exam Structure
WBCS selection process is divided into three stages: the Preliminary Exam, Mains Exam & a Personality Test.
Preliminary Exam is qualifying in nature while the final merit list is based on the performance in Mains Exam and Personality Test.
WBCS Preliminary 2024 Exam Pattern
Preliminary Exam serves as the first step in the WBCS selection process and acts as a screening test for shortlisting candidates for Mains.
Type of Questions: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs).
Marks and Questions: A total of 200 questions, each carrying 1 mark, with negative marking for incorrect answers.
Duration: 150 minutes.

WBCS Personality Test 2024
The final stage of WBCS selection process is the Personality Test designed to assess a candidate’s traits, general awareness and suitability for administrative roles. Marks are allocated based on the candidate’s group:
Group A & B: 200 marks.
Group C: 150 marks.
Group D: 100 marks.
2. Preparation Strategy for Prelims
The focus should be on strengthening the basics and building speed for objective-type questions.
General Studies
Focus on ancient, medieval & modern Indian history as well as West Bengal History with an emphasis on the Indian freedom struggle. Refer to books like NCERT History (Class 6-12) & Bipin Chandra’s India’s Struggle for Independence.
Focus on both physical & human geography of India and West Bengal. NCERTs (Class 6-12) & G.C. Leong’s Physical Geography are great references.
Focus on the Indian Constitution, political system
& public administration as well as West Bengal Polity. Follow M. Laxmikanth’s Indian Polity & Current Affairs.
Prepare basic economic concepts & government schemes. Follow Ramesh Singh’s Indian Economy & update your knowledge with the latest budget and economic surveys.
Do general science from NCERTs. Keep up with recent developments in science & technology including health, space & technology.
Use NCERT for basics on environment and follow current environment news especially topics related to environmental policies and climate change.
Aptitude Test
Focus on topics like arithmetic, number system, geometry & algebra. Regular practice is key. Refer to R.S. Agarwal’s Quantitative Aptitude for practice.
Focus on puzzles, arrangements, coding-decoding, critical reasoning. Practice from R.S. Agarwal’s Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
Current Affairs
Read daily newspapers such as The Hindu, The Times of India, The Indian Express. Make notes from WBCS Gazette, monthly current affairs compilation from APTI PLUS.

Refer to Objective General English by S.P. Bakshi and Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis.
3. Preparation Strategy for Mains
The Mains exam evaluates a deeper understanding of subjects & your ability to present knowledge in a structured and concise manner.
General Studies
Indian History, Culture, and Geography: Similar to Prelims but with more in-depth coverage. Read advanced books for History like Romila Thapar’s Ancient India & for Geography reference Majid Husain’s Geography of India.
Polity: Focus on the historical evolution of the Indian Constitution, Fundamental Rights, duties, the powers of the President etc.
Indian Economy: Besides Ramesh Singh’s Indian Economy also focus on detailed aspects of planning, poverty alleviation, Indian economic reforms.
Governance, Constitution, and Social Justice: Focus on the role of the state in social justice & welfare schemes.
International Relations: Refer to Current Affairs for India’s relations with neighboring countries, global politics, international organizations.
Social Issues: Prepare topics such as communalism, secularism, caste issues, etc. Books like Social Problems in India by Ram Ahuja will be helpful.
Technology, Economic Development, Bio-Diversity, Environment, Security, and Disaster Management: Refer to APTI PLUS and Current Affairs.
Read the Economic Survey/ Budget Summary of India and West Bengal for the latest developments and challenges in the Indian economy.
English Composition
Focus on improving writing skills, particularly essays, précis writing, and comprehension. Practice by writing essays on current affairs, social issues, and general topics.
Indian Language Paper
Choose any of the Indian languages (e.g., Bengali, Hindi, or Urdu) and focus on grammar, translation, and writing skills. Refer to Bengali/Hindi Grammar as per your choice of language.
Optional Subject Paper I & II
Choose an optional subject based on your interest and expertise. Ensure you cover both papers in depth.
Focus on previous years’ question papers and model answers. Practice writing answers within the stipulated time frame.
4. Time Management and Revision
Create a Timetable by allocating time daily for each subject based on its weightage and your comfort level.
Dedicate one day a week for revision focusing on weak areas.
Regularly attempt mock tests for both Prelims & Mains. Analyze your performance & work on improving speed and accuracy.
For Mains focus on improving answer writing by practicing 1-2 questions every day.
Keep revising current affairs as they form a significant part of the exam.
5. Practice with Mock Tests and Previous Year Papers
To succeed in WBCS or any competitive exam, practicing mock tests and previous question papers is a must.
